In a tightly fought district final, Goodrich pitcher Jessica Morgan came up big.
Morgan allowed only three hits and struck out eight as the host Martians defeated Lake Fenton 2-0 on June 5 to win a district championship.
The Martians scored one run each in the fourth and sixth innings, and Morgan made those runs stand up. Julie Owen led the Goodrich offense by going 3-for-3 with a stolen base, while Blaze Wilson went 2-for-2 and played some stellar defense.
‘She had a tremendous catch in center field,? Goodrich coach Rick Bescoe said.
With the win, Goodrich (29-12) advanced to take on Birch Run in Division 3 regional competition Saturday, June 12 at Saginaw Nouvel. The Panthers defeated Montrose 4-0 to win their district.
‘They beat a very good team to get where they’re at,? Bescoe said of Birch Run. ‘They played some tough competition throughout the season, so they’ll be more than ready.?
If the Martians can get past Birch Run, they might have some even tougher competition awaiting them. The winner of that game will take on the winner of the other regional semifinal pitting defending Division 3 state champion Freeland against Frankenmuth in the regional final later in the day.
