Goodrich’s varsity football team is reaching out to become further entrenched in the community.
On Saturday, Sept. 10, about 20 Martians took time to do some landscaping at Genesys Hospice, 7280 S. State Road, Goodrich.
Off the heels of a big win against Durand, the Martians were busy doing such tasks as spreading mulch, trimming weeds, and moving dirt.
‘We’ve wanted to do this for awhile,? said Brad Rainwater, an assistant coach on the Goodrich varsity football team and the coordinator for the team’s visit. ‘Stuff like this helps us give back to the community. You’re trying to teach young men more than playing on Friday.?
Goodrich residents Will and Carole Schultz, parents of Goodrich varsity football player Mike Schultz, came up with the idea for the volunteer effort.
Will Schultz said his oldest son, Brian, started volunteering at Genesys when he was in the fifth grade, and Mike has also volunteered for some time at Genesys, including working on the birdfeeders.
Senior Joe Leppek, a captain on the Goodrich varsity, said the Martians are trying to set a good example in the community by virtue of their volunteer efforts.
‘It’s all about being a positive leader,? he said. ‘We need to help out in the community. It makes us a better team by bonding outside of football.?
