In their opening meet of the spring, the Goodrich girls track team showed the depth that should make them a formidable team this year.
The Martian girls finished second in the Division III/IV bracket of the Saginaw Vally State University Indoor Invitational high school track meet March 18.
Goodrich finished with 71 points, trailing only Vermontville Maple Valley, which finished with 81.6 points.
Junior Janee Jones had a big day for the Martians, winning the 400 meters in 1:03.1 and the 1,600 meters in 5:22.8. She also anchored the winning 1,600 and 3,200 meter relay teams.
Jones? 400 time broke the Goodrich record of Tracy Richardson (1:04.8 in 1998), while her 1,600 time beat the record of 5:38 set last year by Kristen Poulos.
The 1,600 meter relay team of Jones, Sam Minkler, Molly Downer and Kelsey Meyers finished in a time of 4:32, while the 3,200 meter team of Jones, Minkler, Meyers and Michelle Elliott won with a time of 10:40.2.
Goodrich’s other wins came in the 800 meters (Minkler’s 2:31.7 broke a school record of 2:41 set by Erin Adamec in 1992), and the 60 meter hurdles (Elliott, 9.85). The 800 meter hurdle team of Elliott, Casey Tubbs, Melissa Luttrel, and Amber Beard finished second (2:00.39).
Meanwhile, Jeff O’Mara and Charlie Richards highlighted the Goodrich boys track team’s efforts at Saginaw Valley State March 19.
O’Mara finished second among Division III-IV competitiors in the pole vault with a vault of 10?, while Richards also earned a second-place finish with a time of 9.21 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles.
Other Goodrich placers were the 800 meter relay team (third, 1:42.15); Jeff Decator (fifth, long jump, 18?9-1/4?); Andrew Benson (fifth, 60 meter hurdles, 9.31); Ben Ommarow (sixth, long jump, 18?9-1/4?); and Ben Richards (sixth, 800 meters, 2:13.78).
The Martians return to action March 30 at the Wolverine Invitational in Ypsilanti.
