In the 1990s, the Chicago Bulls perfected the art of the ‘three-peat,? winning three straight National Basketball Association titles on two different occasions.
The Goodrich varsity girls cross country team will be attempting a ‘three-peat? of their own Saturday, Nov. 5, as they seek their third straight Division 3 state girls cross country championship.
The Martians qualified for the state meet by winning the Division 3 regional meet Saturday, Oct. 29 at Springfield Oaks County Park in Davisburg. Goodrich finished with 32 points, ahead of second-place Macomb Lutheran North (66) and third-place Perry (112).
Goodrich’s Kaitlin O’Mara led all competitors in the meet, crossing the finish line in 18:39, her best time of the season. Kelsey Krych finished second with 19:32, while Kelsey Meyers took fourth (19:45).
Rounding out the Goodrich scoring were Mary Haiderer, who finished seventh (20:14), and Kayla O’Mara, who ran on an injured foot but still placed 18th (21:08).
Sam Minkler (19th, 21:21) and Laura Haiderer (21st, 21:41) were the other Goodrich competitors in the regional meet.
The Goodrich boys team did not qualify for the state meet, as they finished 12th among the boys teams in their regional meet. Jeremy Gauthier led the Martian boys? runners, placing 20th overall (18:16).
As the Martian girls get ready for the state meet, Goodrich coach Jennifer Sweet said the team is staying positive.
‘We’ve got good spirits right now,? she said. ‘We’re trying to focus on team unity and keeping them healthy. This week is about keeping a good mindset. The girls are excited to be going to states.?
Sweet said Hillsdale figures to be the Martians? toughest competition in the state meet, and is optimistic about the team’s chances.
‘If the girls run a smart race, I think we’ll do well,? she said. ‘The girls are very smart racers. I know they’re going to give their best.?
