Fund-raiser to benfit 3-Day Walk

A special fund-raising event for a local team walking in the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk is set to take place at The Oxford Tap (36 S. Washington) on Saturday, June 16.
Team WISE is comprised of 15 women, five of which are from Oxford, and it’s their goal to raise $12,000 locally to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fund breast cancer research and community outreach.
Oxford resident and WISE team member Kristen Hulbert said the team was formed a few months ago after a friend’s co-worker, named Evelyn, lost her battle with breast cancer. WISE is an acronym for Walking in Support of Evelyn.
‘So now, we’re walking in her memory and to support other women who have breast cancer and their families,? Hulbert said.
The fund-raising event at the Tap will start at 9 p.m. with a raffle for various prizes from local merchants, like a golf outing from Boulder Pointe Golf Club, and certificates for pizza and coffee, but prizes are still coming in.
The Grand Prize will be a two night stay at the Omni Suite Hotel in downtown Detroit.
At 10 p.m., Oxford resident and musician Joe Nicosia will hit the stage, with Hulbert as a guest vocalist, so you can groove to the oldies and even more contemporary hits.
‘It’ll be something for everyone to enjoy,? Hulbert said. ‘It’s a great opportunity to bring the community together.?
Another way the team is bringing the community together to help fight breast cancer is through their ‘Flocking Oxford? initiative, where Team WISE will place funny, pink flamingos in the yard of an unsuspecting resident and ask for donations.
Once a donation is made, the bird will be picked up from the yard.
‘It’s a great way to show your support for the 3-Day Walk,? Hulbert said.
When Team WISE isn’t busy planning for the big event at the Tap, they’re training both physically and mentally for their big 60 mile (20 miles-a-day) walk this September by jumping rope, swimming and walking hills.
Since she became a part of Team WISE, Hulbert said she’s been amazed to learn that everyone is affected by breast cancer.
‘I didn’t really realize myself how widespread it was,? she said. ‘It made me feel even more proud to know that I’m doing something to help.?
