The Brandon varsity hockey team rebounded from a loss earlier in the week to defeat their neighbors from Goodrich in a Dec. 10 matchup.
Nick Foren had two goals, while Kyle Doan added three assists and Matt Cinader two assists as Brandon defeated the Martians 4-1 at the Polar Palace in Lapeer. With the win, the Blackhawks improved to 3-2 on the season.
Foren kicked off the game’s scoring with 3:09 left in the first period on assists from Doan and defenseman Aric Bekaert. However, Goodrich answered not too long afterwards, as the Martians? Tom Ferreri scored on assists from Max Hawkins and Reece Geml with 1:45 left in the first, tying the game at one.
After that, it was all Blackhawks. Matt Cinader wasted little time putting the Blackhawks back in front in the second period, scoring 46 seconds into the period (on assists from Doan and Alex Hockey) to put Brandon ahead 2-1.
In the third period, Brandon iced the contest on goals from Blake McLellan (assisted by Steve Cybulski) with 4:39 remaining, and Foren (assisted by Doan and Cinader) with 3:32 left in the period.
Three days earlier, the Blackhawks and host Flint Kearsley lit up the scoreboard during the teams? game at Ice Mountain Sports Complex in Burton.
Unfortunately for the Blackhawks, they came out on the short end of the scoreboard, losing a 6-3 contest.
After a scoreless first period, the teams combine for three goals within one minute in the second period, beginning with 13:55 left in the period, when Kearsley took a 1-0 lead. Doan then scored on an assist from Foren just 37 seconds later to tie the game at one.
However, Kearsley scored just 15 seconds after the Blackhawks tied it up, reclaiming the lead at 2-1. The Hornets added two more goals later in the second to take a 4-1 lead, but Brandon’s Troy Nuccio scored a shorthanded goal with 4:47 left in the second to cut the Kearsley lead to 4-2.
The Blackhawks narrowed the Hornets? lead to 4-3 with 3:19 left in the third period, as Foren scored on an assist from Cinader. However, Kearsley scored two more goals, including an empty-net goal with 11 seconds left in the game, to preserve the win.
