Goodrich’s varsity basketball team was outmatched in their district semifinal game against Flint Southwestern Wednesday, Mar. 8.
Alex Hamo scored 17 points and Derrick Smith added 11 as the Knights defeated the Martians 77-25. Goodrich’s season ended with an 8-13 overall record.
The Knights led Goodrich 40-9 at halftime, and a running clock started with 2:03 left in the fourth quarter and the Knights leading 57-17.
Jake McGinnis led the Martians with eight points and seven rebounds.
Montrose’s one-two punch of David Lenear and Chad Powell was too much for the Martians to overcome in the final Genesee Area Conference Red Division regular season game Mar. 3.
Lenear scored 25 points and Powell 14 as the host Rams defeated the Martians 62-47, clinching the outright GAC Red Division championship. Montrose finished 12-5 in the league, one game ahead of Lake Fenton, while Goodrich finished at 8-9 in league play.
Lenear scored half of his team’s points in the first half, compiling 14 points as the Rams took a 28-20 lead at halftime. Powell then made 5-of-6 free throws in the third quarter, and Lenear then scored nine points in the fourth quarter as the Rams put the game away.
The Montrose duo’s free throw shooting was a big help to the team, as Lenear made 7-of-9 free throws and Powell 6-of-8.
Goodrich did not have a player reach the double-digit scoring plateau. McGinnis came the closest with nine points, and also led the team with seven rebounds.
