The Goodrich wrestling team’s first meet of the year Dec. 2 resulted in a split decision.
The host Martians won their opening matchup against Mayville 48-30, but dropped their following match against Grand Blanc 45-34.
Garrett Higdon (119) opened things up on a winning note for the Martians against Mayville, pinning Andrew Wheatley in 5:52. Jason Fischer (125) followed up by pinning Dakota Kibles in 1:41, while Grant Overcashier (130) earned a 6-3 decision against Jon Tippett.
The Martians wrapped the match up in decisive fashion, winning the last five matches. Erik Fernelius (171) pinned Tim Johnson in 1:51; Kyle Fletcher (189) defeated Matt Richardson by a 12-4 decision; Andy Bohlen (215) pinned Tony Reece in 2:53; Ethan Tessier (275) pinned George Stauch in 1:55; and Brian Grzecki (103) pinned Craig Ervin in 5:50.
Unlike their previous matchup, the Martians started out slow against Grand Blanc, which won three of the first four matchups between the two teams. Overcashier (130) was the exception, pinning Senchez Richardson in 54 seconds.
Fernelius (171), Fletcher (189), Bohlen (215), and Tessier (275) won their matchups to pull the Martians in front, but Grand Blanc won their last three matches to take the win.
