On May 20, high school sophomores gathered on the campus of Concordia University in Ann Arbor for a three-day leadership-building conference hosted by the Michigan Youth Leadership (MYLead).
Oxford High School student Kaity Fischer, 15, joined approximately 150 students from high schools across Michigan to help build involvement in their schools.
‘It was about getting out of our comfort zone to get people involved,? said the OHS student council member.
MYLead is a non-profit organization dedicated to motivating the youth of Michigan to continuously make a positive impact on communities through leadership.
Fischer was sponsored by the Oxford Lions Club and said activities like team-building exercises, ethical issues and goal-setting discussions were prominent during the weekend.
Justin Ryan from the Dale Carnegie Systems in Rochester Hills and Kenneth Edmonds, an instructor from the Academy of Business Leadership in Santa Monica, California, were among the many speakers at the conference.
Fischer said not only did she learn about being a leader, but how to conquer her fear of public speaking.
‘I went to one of (The Lions Club) meetings to thank them and I could get up in front of them fine,? she said. ‘It definitely makes you a lot more comfortable.?
Fischer, who was voted president for next year’s Student Council, advises students interested in leadership programs to do it soon in their high school career.
