Despite a two-goal deficit with 12 minutes left, freshman kicker Mikayla Ferer didn’t give up.
Ferer got control of the ball, dribbled around her Lake Orion defending opponent, and shot the ball into the back of the net. Fired up for a come back, adrenaline kicked in and the Lady Wolves increased their urgency of play, but the final minutes ran out for a 2-1 loss to he Dragons.
Coach Sarah Wasilk was content with the outcome of the May 14 game.
‘The seniors stepped up their leadership on and off the field. They came out intense and the rest of the team followed suit,?
The Lady Wolves played a phenomenal game against their long time rival, she said.
‘Lake Orion has a lot of talent and we didn’t see their full capacity tonight,? she said.
Lake Orion Coach Ken Snage said his team ‘played rather average ? it was enough to win but not much more.?
During the first half, Lake Orion controlled most of the play, but Clarkston’s defensive line was able to tame the Dragons to zero goals for the first 28 minutes.
However, a foul just inside the box would reward the opposition with a penalty kick. Lake Orion’s Kelsie Deppen took advantage of the situation and smoothly placed the ball into the corner of the net.
Down by one goal, the Lady Wolves came out aggressively into the second half. There were several offensive attempts and her team had ‘a few quality shots on net,? Wasilk said.
Yet, it was Lake Orion who managed to tally the second goal of the game. A scramble in front of the net provided some ‘edge-of-your-bleacher? drama for the fans. Clarkston’s defense attempted to save the ball as it rolled over the goal line, but a controversial call awarded the Dragon goal.
A head-to-head collision put a halt to the game, but not the excitement, as a player from both teams suffered an injury.
The team’s final home game, graduating Lady Wolves were recognized by their teammates, coaches, and fans during Senior Night celebrations.
The Lady Wolves will take on Berkley and Farmington High School this week in their last two regular season games of the year.
