Fate of Hegel traffic lights still uncertain

Goodrich – The light at East Hegel Road will stay, however it will continue to flash yellow until a study of the West Hegel light is finished.
‘When the study is concluded, I will meet with the village council to discuss the final recommendation which could mean the removal of the West Hegel traffic light, if appropriate,? said Terry Anderson, regional director for the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Anderson said the East and West Hegel traffic lights are only 600 feet from one another.
‘Commuters in the morning and at night see both lights, and a light doesn’t necessarily stop anybody. This kind of a situation could alter the way someone is driving,? he said.
‘A driver might even try to beat the lights.?
Making sure the engineering is done right and everything is covered is what Anderson said he plans to do. ‘Anytime we change operations we conduct a study. School operations will also be taken into account. This is an important study. If we step out of bounds, the Attorney General might not represent us,? he said.
Anderson said once the study is done, he will sit down with the village council. ‘Once we make a decision, we don’t want to reopen the books. We will be asking the council to give us a resolution asking them to abide by what the study shows.?
