The nearly 50 teams and over 200 fifth- graders who participated in the 2006 Battle of the Books at the Orion Township Library, were honored in an awards ceremony in Lake Orion High School’s Performing Arts Center on March 22.
Township Clerk Jill Bastian and author/illustrator Matt Faulkner spoke at the event, and Faulkner signed copies of his books for interested readers after the ceremony.
The library awarded prizes for participation to all teams, in addition to honoring best team name, best team costumes and the top five overall finishers.
The book battlers were tested on their knowledge of 16 different books, and scored on a scale of 0-100.
Seven different teams put up scores over 90, and 28 had scores of 80 or better.
The winning team was the Battling Bookmarks, with an impressive score of 98. Katie Corcoran, Taylor Kolodziej, Danielle Rabie and Ashley Tice were members of the team from Paint Creek, coached by Kristi Tice.
What Would Jesus Read finished second with 96 points, followed by the Battle Brigade with 95.
The Mythical Mad Hatters and The Tasmanian Readers rounded out the top five.
