Goodrich’s football team made school history, while Kirk Elsworth is on the verge of making county history.
The Martians won their first outright league championship since 1971 by defeating host LakeVille 61-14 in an Oct. 15 Genesee Area Conference Red Division contest, improving to 7-1 on the season and finishing at 5-0 in the GAC Red.
In the process, senior running back Kirk Elsworth moved within striking distance of the Genesee County record for rushing yards in a season.
Elsworth rushed 26 times for a school-record 325 yards, and scored six touchdowns. He now has 1,945 yards on the season, 50 less than Grand Blanc’s Reggie Barton had when he set the county record with 1,995 yards in 1999.
The Goodrich senior set the tone early when he rushed for a 64-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. He added a 57-yard touchdown run later in the quarter, and would add 34- and 32-yard touchdown runs later in the game.
