Two key elements that emerged from Adam McCormick’s Eagle Scout project.
McCormick Eagle Scout honor, the highest in the Boy Scouting program , was accomplished last summer by refurbishing the pavilion along with new picnic tables tops located in the Reid Elementary School playground area.
‘The pavilion was an old structure and needed some attention,? said McCormick, 18. ‘I sometimes would walk down to the pavilion with friends and realized it was in pretty rough shape.?
McCormick a member of Boy Scout Troop 340 who will attended Western Michigan University this fall, recruited about 25 people to assist with the project last summer.
‘We completed the project in one weekend last August,? he said. ‘Part of the Eagle Scout project was to lead by example’I worked along with many others to get this job done.?
Funding for the project which cost an estimated $900 and included shingles, lumber and paint was accomplished by collecting scrap metals which were sold and ultimately recycled.
“I could ahve collected pop cans all summer to raise that money,” he said. “Instead I collected metal items. When people realized what I was doing they gave me old swing sets, engine parts-I even climbed up on a roof and took down an old satellite dish. Within two weeks I had more than enough money for the project. The environment is a little cleaner and the Eagle project is completed.”
Adam is the son of Sue and Steve McCormick.
