Duck race to benefit area youth programs

If you’ve never seen a blue or yellow duck, now’s your chance.
Of course they’re not real ducks, they’re plastic, and they’ll be racing down Paint Creek to have lucky residents of Addison, Oxford and Orion win some cash on Saturday, September 9.
The ducks will race from Children Park to Meek’s Park in the Village of Lake Orion at 1 p.m., with proceeds from the event benefiting the Oxford/Addison Youth Assistance (OAYA) and the Orion Area Youth Assistance programs.
Both youth programs were given control of the race when the Oxford/Lake Orion Optimist Club dissolved after hosting the event for 10 years.
Shirley Clancy, secretary for the OAYA board and resident of Addison Township, said the joint event is asking for a $5 donation for each duck. The ducks will have a number corresponding to a ticket number and will race to award one lucky first place winner with $999, second place winner with an Apple iPod, and third place with $200.
Clancy said racers should meet at Meek’s Park, located behind Children’s Park near the Orion Art Center, early.
Racers and watchers will also be able to enjoy free pop and chips at the event.
Clancy said the family event draws a lot of attention and for good reason.
‘All the proceeds do go to benefit the wonderful cause of helping young people and their families in our area,? she said.
Tickets can be purchased the day of the event, or by calling Shirley Clancy at (248) 628-7025.
