When you seek out a professional who’s dedicated four decades to practicing and perfecting his craft, you’re not only in good hands, you’re in the best hands.
In recognition of his 39 years experience in the field of optometry, Oxford resident Dr. Theodore Walton was recognized by his peers last year with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Michigan Optometric Association.
Dr. Walton began practicing optometry in downtown Oxford with his father, Dr. Theodore B. Walton, Sr, O.D., in 1966. He moved to his current office location at 837 S. Lapeer Rd., Suite 101 in 1976.
As President of the Michigan Optometric Association from 1981 to 1983, Dr. Walton was instrumental in getting legislation passed that allows optometrists to treat eye diseases. Over the years, he’s been a consultant to various contact lens companies by testing new products, which have improved patients? eyesight and dramatically enhanced the quality of their lives.
But just because he’s been honored for a lifetime of work, don’t expect Dr. Walton to rest on his laurels or retire to some place warm any time soon.
The good doctor continues to practice optometry with his partner and colleague, Dr. Elizabeth Becker, who joined Dr. Walton’s practice in 1991. Her arrival from England brought a new specialty to Oxford ? Low Vision Examination and Treatment. As a certified low vision specialist, Dr. Becker has improved the daily lives of numerous people.
Dr. Becker received a Keyperson Award in 2001 for her work with Medicare, Medicaid and Blue Cross in obtaining eyecare insurance coverage for Michigan residents. She continues to work diligently on this committee.
With a shared dedication and passion for optometry and their patients? welfare, Drs. Walton & Becker continue to provide comprehensive, professional eyecare that includes a wide range of services.
Using state-of-the-art equipment, including digital retinal photography, corneal topography (mapping), corneal pachymetry and detailed visual field testing, Drs. Walton & Becker provide complete eye examinations for the whole visual system (the connection between the eyes and brain which allows the latter to read and process images), not just a patient’s vision.
By examining the eye and visual system, Drs. Walton & Becker can diagnose diseases and disorders of the eye such as infections, glaucoma, cataracts, amblyopia, astigmatism and many others.
Treatments include, but are not limited to glaucoma, eye infections, allergies and non-invasive surgery such as removal of superficial foreign bodies from the eye.
An eye examination may also lead to the detection of systemic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure).

Those in need of contact lenses will find a complete line at Drs. Walton & Becker, including one-day and two-week disposables, toric, bifocal, tinted, gas permeable and the innovative 30-day continuous wear lenses.
The doctors are particularly excited about a new two-week disposable contact lens made of a revoluntionary softer silicone material that significantly increases the amount of oxygen the cornea receives, resulting in less infections and an overall healthier eye during long-term contact use.
According to Dr. Walton, the rate of infection for standard contact lenses used everyday is about 1 in 4,000. The infection rate for those who use extended wear contacts is approximately 1 in 400.
But for those who use contact lenses with this new silicone material, the infection rate is about 1 in 30,000.
‘When used as prescribed, the infection rate is dramatically reduced,? Dr. Walton said.
The new softer silicone lenses also ‘don’t dry out quite as much? as other lenses, according to Dr. Becker, which is good news for people who tend to have dry eyes. The new lenses are also more ‘deposit-resistant? so they work well longer and can be worn comfortably for the full two weeks.
A free trial pair of most contact lenses is available to patients the same day as their contact lens examination.
