Lake Orion senior Drew Collette will compete next year at Cornerstone University, after signing a letter of intent to run cross country and track for the next four years for the Golden Eagles.
‘Drew’s worked real hard to get that,? coach Stan Ford said, noting Collette has the attitude and talent to succeed at the next level.
Ford encouraged Collette to try other sports after he began to lose interest in running in the ninth grade.
‘I knew if he came back he’d be completely dedicated to it,? Ford said.
Collette, who returned to running as a junior, credited his coach and mentor for allowing him that freedom.
‘Now I love to run – just to run – not just for competition,? Collette said. ‘That is what it’s all about.
The son of Dave and Shanda Collette, Drew was receiving interest from several colleges and universities, but ultimately settled on Cornerstone.
‘I think it’s a good fit for him,? Ford said.
Collette was given a full four-year tuition scholarship for Cornerstone, which competes in the NAIA.
Collette’s teammate in distance running, fellow senior Rob Shinouskis, is considering a scholarship to run at Michigan State.
