After collecting nearly 3,000 pounds of food for the Oxford/Orion FISH Food Pantry last year, the women at Oxford’s Curves for Women are setting the bar higher this year.
‘I would love to see 5,000 pounds of food,? said Oxford resident and Curves member Tammy Martin. ‘I just have a real passion for feeding the hungry.?
Beginning March 1, Curves will start the 9th Annual Curves Food Drive, where residents can drop off non-perishable food items for FISH.
To celebrate the generosity of the community, Curves will waive its normal service fee of $149 for any new member who brings in a bag of items until March 15.
Last year, Curves Food Drive nationwide collected 11 million pounds of food for local communities all over the world.
Unfortunately, after the holidays are over, donations to FISH drop significantly.
Suzanne Ardelan, owner of the Oxford Curves, said she’s happy that Curves benefits the community in so many ways.
‘It’s two-fold. Get them in here and get them healthy and exercise and take care of those who need help,? she said.
Although the other Curves members jokingly call Martin the ‘Food Nazi? because of her high goal of 5,000 pounds, Ardelan said they would be happy with 4,500.
This isn’t the first time her members have stepped up to bat for FISH. She periodically gets a wish-list from Pantry Manager Val Cass for specific items, to which the Curves members show no hesitation to bring in.
‘Whatever Val needs our ladies are always willing to help,? Martin said.
‘We have an awesome group of gals.?
If residents are unable to drop off food, Ardelan said to call them and they will come pick it up from your home.
