A place to call home will soon be a reality for the Schrauger family.
Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson announced yesterday that he has assembled a group of concerned business owners and citizens to build a 1,800-square-foot home for Cliff and Vicki Schrauger.
‘This is more than any family should have to endure,? he said in a press conference yesterday. ‘There’s only so much we can do in the scope of this tragedy, but we can, in fact, give them a home.?
Through the help of local businessman Carl Cyrowski, three lots in the Orion area have been found, and a trip was planned to take place yesterday for the family to look at them and start to make a decision.
Clarkston builder Forrest Milzow will head up the construction of the home, which is being referred to as ‘The Schrauger Home Project.?
‘With kind people in this kind community, I’m sure we can get this house built,? Patterson said, noting that the house will be 100-percent donated.
The end goal of the project is to have a home completed in six months, mortgage free, that the family can move in to. They are currently staying with Vicki’s mother in Okemos.
A registry has been set up through the county website, www.oakgov.com/house, of items and services that are needed for the completion of the house. These include lumbers, bricks, concrete, plumbing and windows, among other things.
‘We’re dumbfounded, thrilled and blessed that so many people would give,? said Vicki Shrauger in regards to the home project and monies that have been raised for the family.
‘The compassion of the community ? we’re blown away by it,? her husband, Cliff, added.
The registry website also features other ways to help, as well as a full story about the family’s plight and a link to the Community Bible Church , the family’s church in Waterford that is accepting donations on the family’s behalf. Contributions made through the church can be used as a charitable write-off for taxes.
