Oxford Village Council voted 3-2 to separate the vacant Clerk/Treasurer position at their meeting last week and concurred with Village Manager Joe Young’s recommendation in appointing Maureen Helmuth as treasurer.
Council members Teri Stiles and Chris Bishop cast the dissenting votes to separate the positions.
Helmuth, the village’s current Deputy Treasurer, was recommended by Young because of her performance and qualifications.
‘Her performance is most acceptable keeping the accounts up to date, deposits and tax billing, payroll and accounts payable,? he wrote in a letter to council. ‘Maureen is very knowledgeable, dependable and responsible and is deserving of the position of Treasurer.?
Helmuth’s base salary as Village Treasurer will be $39,073 with a $0.96 per hour increase available.
She began working for the Village of Oxford in the clerical department from 1986-1990 and was the utility billing clerk from 1990 until 2005 when she became Deputy Treasurer.
Helmuth is a Certified Public Finance Administrator and is a 2006 graduate of the Michigan Municipal Treasurer’s Institute at Central Michigan University.
She also works as a cashier and information assistant at Borders Books in Auburn Hills.
As far as the open Clerk position, the council agreed to advertise for the position. Rose Bejma is currently employed with the village as Acting Clerk until a new clerk is hired.
