Contract issues draw protest

Goodrich-Protesters hit the Goodrich Pathway along Hegel Road near Goodrich High School on Monday, holding fluorescent orange signs, expressing concern over contract issues between teachers and school administration.
‘We’re out here picketing because we want the public to realize we still don’t have a contract and we are still bargaining and working for what’s good for the kids and teachers,? said Dianne Bregenzer, Michigan Education Association Uni-Serve representative.
Issues have been ongoing in the district, with disputes ranging from the proposed school calendar to concerns over healthcare benefits, leaving the school on the MEA’s critical list since last year.
The current teachers? contract expired July 31, and tensions escalated following an Aug. 21 decision by the school board to discontinue giving additional money to the schools? educational support staff ? which includes bus drivers? until an agreement is reached with the MEA.
‘We are continuing to negotiate in good faith,? said superintendent Kimberly Hart, adding, ‘it’s a long process.?
‘Anytime the issues of salary and healthcare are on the table, negotiations are more difficult than either side would like,? said Hart.
