Congratulations to Oxford High School senior Sarah Tomaka who was awarded with the Congressional Medal of Merit May 5.
Michigan State Representative Mike Rogers awarded 40 students from District #8 at the state capitol in Lansing.
Each student selected has demonstrated exemplary citizenship and academic excellence throughout their high school careers.
Tomaka, 17, was nominated by OHS principal Mike Schweig for her dedication in creating a patriotic display case recognizing OHS alumni who have and are serving in the military.
‘Her demonstrated citizenship, community service and academic achievement (3.71 GPA) truly merit this award,? he said.
Tomaka is a member of the National Honor Society, a Drum Major in the Marching Band, a varsity swim team member, assistant coach for the U12 Boys Soccer Team, member of Quiz Bowl, SADD, and Jazz Band.
At the ceremony in the State Capitol Building’s Rotunda in Lansing, Tomaka said Rogers spoke to the high school students about how they are the future of Michigan.
Afterward, the 126th Army Brass Quintet performed before the students were awarded with their medals and a certificate. ‘This was really neat that I got to be the representative of the whole school,? Tomaka said.
