Last week, kids from all over Oxford pulled together to help the victims of hurricane Katrina by collecting money, canned goods and by donating water.
One group of kids in the Oxford Woods subdivision off of Drahner decided to collect pop cans.
Numerous bags later, a total of $337.10 was collected to go towards the American Red Cross. That’s a lot of soda!
A number of homes even donated money. One woman donated a $100 check to the American Red Cross and was happy to see the kid’s efforts.
The kids said they saw the devastating images on the news and felt ‘really sad.?
‘I hope it will help them, if we raise a lot of money to buy new houses,? said Ellie Shaw.
Oxford Woods resident Mark Pernicano said he and his wife usually donate to kids collecting money for anything in their subdivision.
But when the first group of kids came to his door earlier in the day, he was apprehensive and decided not to donate any cans.
Then he had a change of heart.
‘We’re not in knee-deep water. If I want a drink of water I can go get a drink of water. I can sleep with a blanket in a dry bed and flush my toilet,? he said.
With that in mind, Pernicano walked out to the street and donated a full bag of cans to the kids.
