There’s nothing like cuddling up with a blanket and a good book on a cold winter day.
So why not win a prize doing it?
The Oxford Public Library will be starting their 10-week long adult Winter Reading Program this month.
Dubbed ‘Cold Days, Warm Hearts,? readers can pick up suggested reading lists and win prizes, like a special mug with a packet of double chocolate truffle hot chocolate.
Library staff member Sarah Emino suggests these readings to make your cold winter warmer:
Dark Winter by William Dietrich: Twenty-six rugged adventurers unknowingly isolate themselves with a psychopath in the Antarctic wilderness.
Shades of Winter by Linda Fallon: Detained from his wedding by the spirits he is channeling, a paranormal expert finds himself and his fianc? trapped in an abandoned hotel.
Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier: Based on local history and family stories passed down by the author’s great-great-grandfather, this book is the tale of a wounded soldier who walks away from the ravages of war back to his prewar sweetheart.
The Photograph by Penelope Lively: A landscape historian in search of the living past of his dead wife.
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden: In 1929 an impoverished nine-year-old from a fishing village is sold to a geisha house in Kyoto. As a renowned geisha she enters a society of wealth, privilege and political intrigue.
The Wings of Morning ? A couple is struck with love only to be violently separated by their feuding elders and catapulted to opposite ends of the earth ? she to aristocratic England, and he to China. Left behind at home, growing stronger from her own desperate struggle is a hired girl whose secret story entwines the fates of them all.
Register for the library’s program on Saturday, January 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and enjoy a cup of cocoa or cider. Registration will continue through January.
There will be a weekly drawing on Fridays at 2 p.m. for the coffee mugs with hot chocolate packets. On March 16, the grand prize, two beautiful handmade fleece blankets, will be awarded to two lucky readers.
One blanket is blue with snowflake buttons while the other is red with heart-shaped buttons.
Happy reading!
