Coach: Girls basketball young, but intense

The Lady Cats varsity basketball team kicked off the season with a 1-1 record after beating Lakeland 33-28 on Dec. 10, then falling to John Glenn 35-46 on Dec. 12
After coming off a 16-5 record last year, but losing a lot of senior players, Head Coach Steve Emert said he has no set expectations as to how well this year’s team will do.
‘We will be young and inexperienced, but will play with a tremendous amount of intensity,? Emert said. ‘We are growing and developing every day and there is tremendous intensity on this team. ‘How we continue to develop will determine how we do this year.?
This year’s returning players include ? senior captains Abby Butkiewicz and Caitlin Wright, as well as junior Grace Cleland.
‘Our captains bring hard work and leadership to the team,? Emert said.
Teams in the league to watch out for, according to Emert, are South Lathrup, Rochester Adams, Clarkston and Lake Orion.
‘We look forward to competing in the OAA red division, participating in (the) Northville tournament and MHSAA tournament,? Emert said.
In his four years as varsity coach at Oxford, he has compiled a 56-28 record.
His overall career record is 369-215.
The Lady Cats will next take the court 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11 at home.
