Walking through the centuries-old Lakeview Cemetery in Independence Township, it’s understandable if one feels the urge to ask occupants what their lives were like.
Next weekend, you can.
Clarkston Community Historical Society hosts its annual Cemetery Walk, 6:30-8 p.m., Saturday, May 22, in the cemetery, 6150 White Lake Road. Costumed re-enactors, some direct descendants of those they represent, will share stories and demonstrate skills of early residents.
“It’s a fund raiser for the historical society and a way to raise awareness and education about our pioneers,” said James Schultz, chair of the event. “We’re hoping for a nice day,”
‘Cemetery walks are a fun and engaging way to learn about local history, and we are fortunate that many descendants of Clarkston’s pioneers still live in this community and treasure its rich history,? said Jennifer Arkwright, society president.
The tour will feature:
? W.C. Petty, town photographer, played by Les Haight;
? Maj. John Knox, Civil War veteran, played by Larry Hatchcock;
? Frank Yeager, town blacksmith, played by Joe Luginski;
? Flower Irish, early Clarkston resident, played by descendant Connie Irish;
? Edwin C. Clark, one of the brothers who founded Clarkston, played by Bart Clark, descendant;
? Dr. Charles Gray Robertson, town physician, played by descendant Charles Robertson III; and
? Martha Vliet, one of Clarkston’s early residents, played by Jane Morse.
Ticket price is $10 for adults, $5 for students, and includes refreshments and live music. They can be purchased at Clarkston Country Store, 21 N. Main, and Independence Township Library, 6495 Clarkston Road. Tickets also will be available at the event.
Park at Deer Lake Beach or Depot Park, with shuttle service to the cemetery.
