Three hundred dollars, Kyle Catalano kept repeating as he and his costars prepared for rehearsal.
‘Seventy-five dollars a head, 150 people and that’s for catering,? he continued as he slowly became Mr. Banks for Clarkston High School’s rendition of Father of the Bride.
The play begins with Catalano and Mrs. Banks, portrayed by Stephanie Burnham, learning their daughter, Kay, is engaged to Buckley Dunstan, a man they have only seen around the house a few times.
‘I am frustrated because I don’t know this kid,? said Catalano. ‘Whenever he is around me he doesn’t talk a lot. Then, we start finding out how much everything costs and I just go crazy.?
Burnham acts as a relaxed counterpart to Mr. Banks and tries to calm him down as the wedding becomes bigger – adding caterers, florists, dressmakers, furniture movers and a large pile of debt mounts.
‘I, pretty much, want Kay’s wedding to be like mine all over again,? said Burnham, mixing more into the plot. ‘I am trying to plan the whole thing and calm Mr. Banks down so he doesn’t completely ruin everything I want to happen.?
Kay, Anne Marie Hart, explained as her father becomes more upset it begins to affect her and fiancee, played by Conor Foley.
‘My character is very excited to get married until the issues begin happening,? she said.
As for Buckley, he would rather elope and skip the big wedding.
‘I am about to get married to this beautiful woman but I am incredibly nervous about it. I don’t want a lot of people to be there,? said Foley, about his character. ‘I am also frustrated because I want what I want and I don’t get it. I want to elope but that’s not enough.?
Also, adding to the family dynamic are Kay’s brothers, played by Nathan Larkins and Spencer Bunting.
The antics continue as a mix of lively characters played by Brandon Moore, Rebecca Turner, Maggie Schroeder, Ruthie Hutchons, Kendall Kotcher, Ben Anderson, Lexi Causley, Alex Lanker, Jake Turner and Brad Stencil are added throughout the play.
‘It’s something everyone can relate to,? said Catalano. ‘I am happy she marries him, but I am frustrated a lot.?
The comical stage play is based on the novel, Father of the Bride written by Edward Streeter and illustrated by Gluyas Williams and takes place in the fifties.
