February is just beginning, but Clarkston graduate Lance Holsbeke already has summer plans lined up.
The 2013 graduate of Clarkston High School and junior at Central Michigan University is interning with Student Painters.
“I will be in charge of my own branch of this company in the Clarkston area, which is also where I grew up,” said Holsbeke, who was captain of the 2012 CHS Ski Team, which won the state championship. “I’m in charge of all of my own marketing, sales, and labor.”
His main goal for the company, which paints houses, decks, fences, and other exteriors, is to make more than $70,000 in revenue.
‘By doing this internship I am now able to put ‘business owner? on my resume. But it is the experience that I will have when I am done that I am looking for,? he said.
Other goals are to develop good communication skills.
‘Since I am a business communications major, this is going to be very useful. I am very excited to jump right in and do all the sales and estimates,? he said. ‘I know how hard it might be to talk to customers but watching myself get better at that is going to be very exciting for me.?
In the business world, customer relationships are very important, he said.
‘I’m pretty nervous about all the one-on-one conversations with customers,? he said. ‘But I am going to take it in stride and I fully plan on improving extremely fast.?
