City adopts hazard mitigation plan

Floods, fires and other disasters are unpleasant to think about in general ? let alone thinking of them happening in the streets of Clarkston.
At the June 27 meeting, the Clarkston City Council Board addressed the issue by passing a resolution for the adoption of the Oakland County Hazard Mitigation plan.
The resolution was in response to Oakland County worker Gail Novak’s visit to the June 13 board meeting, where she laid out the importance of the mitigation plan.
‘The plan acknowledges on the city’s behalf that if there was a disaster, adopting the mitigation plan should give us access to potential emergency funds,? Board Member Scott Meyland said.
According to the resolution, the City of the Village of Clarkston will supervise the implementation of the plan’s recommendations, giving special priority to the portions of the plan specific to the city.
Mayor Sharon Catallo explained that the mitigation plan will come at no cost to the city.
Two paragraphs highlighted specific areas in which Clarkston needs to focus attention.
The first stated that tornadoes, ice storms and thunderstorms accompanied by high winds could result in power outages significantly impacting the elderly and those depending on private wells for water.
‘The plan was for the county to be aware of safety issues we might have under certain circumstances,? said Catallo.
A second focused on older buildings located on Main Street between Clarkston and Waldon Road, many of which lack modern fire preventive systems. The paragraph specifically states that according to the City of Clarkston Fire Department, a fire downtown would require assistance.
Tornadoes were also listed as a concern in the plan.
