Ninth graders from Clarkston High School sat front row during the City of the Village of Clarkston council meeting on Feb. 28.
The two students, Jamie Shaw and Stephanie Titsworth, attended as a requirement for their civics class. The assignment: to work with core democratic values in the real world.
‘We thought it would be interesting to attend the meeting because we wanted to learn about our community,? said Shaw.
In order to attend the meeting, the girls had to contact City Manager Art Pappas to coordinate schedules. The girls met with Pappas and learned a lot about the duties of city officials. Then, off to the meeting.
After attending the meeting, the girls realized how much work is involved within a community.
‘I never would have thought there was that much work to be done for such a small community,? said Titsworth.
Shaw and Titsworth both enjoyed the meeting. They were excited when speaking about the experience and can’t wait to attend another.
‘The city has a lot of work to do,? said Shaw. ‘It was a lot more than I would have ever suspected.?
The girls have completed two hours of the required five. They are anxious to attend the next city council meeting.
