The presidential inauguration was something everyone was able to watch on their television sets. Norah Elizabeth Kelly did even better, she had front row seats.
Kelly traveled to Washington D.C. as part of ‘Presidential Classroom? ? a nonprofit organization founded by John. F Kennedy to make young Americans committed to public service. The program is designed for high school juniors and seniors who excel academically and have an interest in politics.
‘I received a packet in the mail inviting me to become a Presidential Classroom Scholar as a member of Who’s Who Among American High School Students,? said Kelly. ‘After reading over the different trips and speaking with many people, I decided to apply for the ‘Presidential Inaugural Program?.?
Once Kelly completed her application and had principal Jan Meagher sign, she was chosen to participate in the event.
The number of applicants was enormous, and Kelly honestly believed she would not be chosen. After a while, she gave up hope until she found a note from her mother. The note read, ‘You’re in!?
Kelly began to prepare for her venture. She purchased the airline ticket and began to pack, which turned out to be a bit more difficult than she expected. Kelly had to consider where she was going and also had to follow the strict dress code. Once her bags were packed, she was off to D.C.
A total of 600 students participated in the program. The students were divided into caucuses of 40 and separated to visit landmarks including: the WWII and Vietnam memorials; the National Archives Museum; and the Washington Monument. The groups also attended the ‘America’s Future Rocks Today? concert, featuring stars such as JoJo, Hilary Duff and Ryan Cabrera.
The trip had one special assignment involved ? the students had to write a letter to the president regarding a current issue and explain what could be done to fix the issue.
‘The highlight of the trip was attending the Presidential Inaugural Ceremony and parade,? said Kelly. ‘We were close enough to actually see the president take the oath.?
Kelly most enjoyed visiting the WWII Memorial, the youth concert, and the amazing people from all over the country she was fortunate to meet.
‘The experience was absolutely amazing,? said Kelly. ‘I made memories, friends and gained knowledge that will last me a lifetime.?
