CHS football team gears up for ‘Rush for Food?

Before they hit the field, members of the Clarkston High School football teams will be hitting the neighborhoods.
The seventh annual ‘Rush for Food? benefitting the Clarkston Lighthouse will take place Friday, Aug. 20 after football practice. From 6-7:30 p.m., members of the junior varsity and varsity football teams, wearing their CHS football jerseys, will be going door-to-door collecting nonperishable food items and personal toiletries for the Lighthouse.
‘We have come to expect it. We really enjoy the football team taking the time to collect the items,? Lighthouse Volunteer Coordinator Michelle Robinson said.
Robinson said the drive comes at a perfect time.
‘This allows us to replenish our supply which runs low in August. The post office drive is in May after we begin running out of the items donated around the holidays and by August we are running out of the items provided by the post office,? Robinson said. ‘This usually tides us over until the holiday.?
The freshman football team will be helping by sorting, boxing and loading all the food at Clintonwood Park.
‘They usually drop off the items right here at our building but with the construction we did not feel it was safe to have all those cars coming in and out of here at one time,? Robinson said.
Robinson added donations are down a little since the construction started.
Last year the teams collected more than 2,000 pounds of food and are hoping for even more this year. The public can drop off donations at the pavilion at Clintonwood Park from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on August 20, or during the week at the Lighthouse facility at 6330 Sashabaw Rd. Drop off hours are 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. but individuals are encouraged to call first.
‘This is very important to us. If the boys ever decided not to do this we would miss is drastically,? Robinson said. ‘We look forward to it every year.?
