Chilly opener for Ladycats

The varsity softball team had a chilly league opener against Brandon on April 16. The Lady Cats lost to the Blackhawks 2-9 and 2-12 in the frigid weather.
Oxford scored its two runs in the top of the fourth for game one. Elise Rendell singled followed by Jessica Anhel with a single. Andrea Olesky bunted, taking Anhel to second and Rendell to third.
Rendell came in on Megan Bono’s single and Jenni Rhodes scrificed herself on an RBI that brought in Anhel.
At the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Wildcats let Brandon through – the Blackhawks had five singles on top of three Oxford errors.
‘The Oxford defense self destructed costing the game,? said Roeher.
Senior Claire Vernarsky pitched for five innings with seven hits, seven earned runs, one ball and one strike out. In game two, she went four innings with seven hits, one strike out, three balls and four earned runs.
In game two, the Lady Cats once again struggled defensively with seven errors. Offensively, the team had 10 strike outs and only two hits.
At the top of the fourth inning, a Brandon error brought Gerbe onto first. She moved quickly over to second with a sacrifice bunt by Vernarsky. Rendell brought Gerbe in on a single, followed by Jessica Anhel who brought in Rendell on an error.
‘It was a tough Flint Metro Legue opener in subzero temperatures,? said Roeher.
The Lady Cats return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 29 at Lake Orion.
