On a night full of emotion and heavy hearts, the Wildcat Varsity Cheer team pulled together and delivered a solid third place effort in the opening meet of the Flint Metro League on Wednesday, Jan. 13.
In a true act of sportsmanship, all 10 teams lit candles and held a moment of silence in honor of the three OHS freshman girls ? Ashley Felder, Brianna Johnson and Sy’Mone Johnson ? who passed away earlier in the week. Swartz Creek High School presented Oxford with a $2,000 check for the deceased girls? funeral fund. Holly sent flowers that were displayed during the event.
Varsity Cheer Head Coach Shari Russell was very thankful for everyone who supported the team that evening.
When the competition got underway, the Wildcats kicked it off with a solid 200.2000 effort, which put them in third place after the opening round. They trailed first place Brandon by 11 points and Lapeer West by three.
After a flawless second round, the Wildcats still found themselves in third place, with Brandon and Lapeer West widening the gap between the top two teams and the rest of the field. The Wildcats were able to make up some ground in the final round, but it wasn’t quite enough. Their round score of 278.0000 pulled them within five points of Lapeer West.
The Wildcats finished with 667.6460 points, 46 points higher than last years first league meet score. Brandon won the event, totaling 743.6820 points.
Russell said that she was very pleased with how well the girls pulled together and preformed during the difficult week.
The girls next event is the All-Oakland County Cheer Championship at Waterford Mott High School on Saturday, Jan. 23.
