Cheer team continues to get stronger

The varsity competitive cheer team has continued to get stronger every year and this year is no exception, according to Head Coach Shari Russell.
‘With 16 athletes returning from last competitive season, we are confident we will be at the top of our game,? Russell said. ‘In addition, we have eight seniors and nine juniors, which converts to a lot of experience and leadership.?
The eight seniors leading the team are Taylor Barrett, Courtney Clavet, Liz Ettinger, Carson Johnson, Ale Lozano, Marissa Ruehl, Abbey Rumptz and Emily Springstube.
‘Our seniors have done an outstanding job so far, leading the team while we learn our choreography. They push the team to stay focused, come to every practice better than the day before, and work to constantly improve,? Russell added. ‘Coach (Melissa) McClain and I have worked with these senior girls for three to four years and have a very strong bond with them. ‘In attitude and effort, they are proving themselves to be our dream team. ‘We are so proud of them.??
Russell said they are also looking forward to their second year in the OAA Red Division. ‘Last year was our first year in the OAA Red Division and (it) was a huge challenge, but (it was) also a great learning experience. ‘While this year will continue to be a challenge, we plan to step it up a notch and see where that carries us against so many wonderful teams,? she said. ‘Undoubtedly, we will be more prepared now that we’ve gained some experience and have that first year behind us. We are also looking forward to post season competition. The team has set big goals and has pretty high expectations.??
The girls? next competition will be the Mardi Gras Mambo Tournament Jan. 11 at Oxford High School. The tournament will start at 9 a.m.
