Laptop computer in hand, a 19-year-old Lake Orion woman brought video to Lake Orion Police of a suspect who allegedly broke into her home and stole cash and property.
‘The use of video or still images of a crime in progress is one of the best forms of evidence, and in this case, was all the proof needed,? said Police Chief Jerry Narsh.
Molly Elizabeth Guzman, 28, of Troy, was arrested and charged with home invasion.
Over the course of four years, the victim noticed missing property from her residence and believed it was someone she knew, according to police.
Determined to capture the crime on video, the victim placed her laptop on her bed and her purse containing cash nearby. The victim left her apartment and returned about an hour later when she discovered cash missing from her wallet.
When the video was played back, Guzman was captured on camera ‘clearly removing cash from the victim’s purse and wallet and stealing a necklace from a bathroom,? according to reports.
The victim was able to identify Guzman as a well known acquaintance of a neighbor in the same apartment building.
Lake Orion Police interviewed the suspect, who upon viewing the pictures and video, confessed to the crime.
Guzman was arraigned Nov. 18 on one count of second degree home invasion, which, if convicted, is a 15-year felony and/or $3,000 fine.
Guzman was unable to post a $10,000 cash bond and waived a preliminary exam. Circuit court date is pending.
