The Oxford varsity girls volleyball team’s record improved to 11-1-2 after taking down both Rocheter Adams and Clarkston at their invitational last Wednesday.
Coach Kristi McDevitt described the girls? play as ‘Jekyll and Hyde.? She said the team battled throughout the night.
Oxford defeated Clarkston in the first match-up of the night.
Senior captain Liz Hazelwood had ‘the golden touch,? according to McDevitt, with 13 kills. Senior captain Kaitlin DuCharme also had 13 kills and 24 digs.
But Clarkston didn’t go down without a fight, leading the Spikers into a ‘nail-biting? five-game match.
Against Adams, Oxford was also pushed into a deciding fifth game after losing two and winning two matches.
Junior Karlyn Stroope was a key player against Adams, with 17 kills. Juniors Alexandra Johnson, Jacqui Sylva and Rachael Precour also did very well off the bench, while senior defenders Amanda Jolly and Kaity Fischer combined for a total of 73 digs for the night. ‘I am proud of our perserverance in chasing the win, but I would much rather be the team being chased with a nice comfortable lead between us,? McDevitt said.
The Spikers will take on the Holly Broncos at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4 at home.
