A Detroit cab driver could face prosecution after allegedly lying about being robbed by gunpoint by a customer in Oxford last Thursday.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s report, the cab driver picked up the 42-year-old Clarkston man in Detroit.
The man tried numerous times to get money for his $97 fare from various ATM machines, but was unable to due to insufficient funds.
The man asked the driver to make one more stop at a home on Dewey St. in Oxford to get money from a friend. The man exited the cab, walked behind the home, and fled on foot with his small dog in tow.
According to the report, the cab driver told deputies the Clarkston man ‘pulled out a black, semiautomatic handgun and pointed it at the back of his head? and asked for all of his money.
The man was eventually located by deputies walking his dog down Dunlap and denied stealing money or having a gun.
After deputies searched the area with their K-9 unit and were unable to find a gun or the money, they questioned the cab driver again, where upon he admitted to fabricating the story, according to the report.
The cab driver explained it was the only way his boss would not hold him accountable for the missing fare.
The Clarkston resident was able to cash a paycheck and pay the $97 fare.
The incident has been forwarded to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
