The annual stocking of brown trout in Kearsley Creek will continue through 2013.
That’s the message from Todd Grischke, supervisor of Regulatory Affairs with the Michigan Fisheries Division, regarding supplying about 6,500 trout fry about 7-inches long.
‘Kearsley Creek is a marginal trout stream’that means the water and habitat is right on the edge of being a real productive fishing location,? said Grischke. ‘However, the stocking will continue for at least the next five years.?
The brown trout planting was scheduled to coincide with the general trout season opening on April 26.
Joe Leonardi, of the Michigan Fisheries Division, announced last week the locations of the brown trout stockings to include County Line Road, Granger Road, Henderson Road, Kent Road, Oakwood Road, Kipp Road, and Ray Road. About 500 trout are also released into Duck Creek near Brandon High School.
‘We have a good base flow of water right now,? said Leonardi. ‘Plenty of snow and rain so far this year has created some decent streams. That means trout will survive better in the stream’many will move up and get eaten in the Goodrich Mill Pond.?
Leonardi said that a trout survey was conducted in 2001 and about 50 trout were found in the Kearsley Creek, averaging about 9 inches each.
‘On average, the trout planted in April will be ‘keeper? size (8 inches) by late May or June.?
