After Brandon’s summer sand volleyball leagues debuted last year, Brian Williams is hoping the leagues continue to grow this summer.
Williams, the Brandon varsity volleyball coach, said this year’s summer leagues are slated to kick off Tuesday, July 11 with the women’s-only leagues, and continue with the coed leagues on Wednesdays.
‘Right now, we’re just getting the leagues signed up,? he said.
Last season, the leagues ran in the same manner, with 11 women’s teams playing Tuesdays and seven coed teams playing on Wednesdays at the sand volleyball courts, which are located behind Brandon High School’s soccer fields at 1025 S. Ortonville Road, Ortonville.
The games were contested in a four-on-four format, with the leagues lasting five weeks (including the championship game on the fifth week).
The leagues were also divided up into three separate age categories last year: ninth grade and lower, 10th through 12th grades, and adults.
Williams said interest in the leagues has been strong so far.
‘It’s going, surprisingly, a lot easier this year,? he said. ‘It looks like we’ll have a lot of people. We’re hoping to use all six of the courts this year. Last year, there were lots of games each night. I’m excited ? I think it will turn out well.?
In addition to the leagues, Williams said Brandon, in conjunction with Lapeer East, is sponsoring a volleyball tournament in August at Brandon Middle School, 609 S. Ortonville Road, Ortonville. He said there could be as many as 20 courts for that tournament.
‘We’re really looking forward to it,? he said. ‘We’re trying to get sponsors.?
