Although Brandon’s girls tennis team finished out of the running at regionals, several Blackhawks provided highlights at the meet.
The Blackhawks finished seventh out of 11 teams at the meet with six points. Holly won the meet with 27 points, while Flushing finished second (24) and Davison third (15). The top three teams competed in the state meet Oct. 15-16, with the Bronchos finishing third in Division 2.
Brandon’s best finish came at #4 doubles, where the team of Anne McCabe and Marilee Rump advanced to the regional semifinals before losing to Holly’s Sandi Miller and Cynthia Stevens 6-4, 6-0.
The Blackhawks earned one point each in the other three doubles flights, with the teams of Holly Gerber and Lyndsey Crain (#1 doubles), Sarah Bond and Megan Ostrowski (#2 doubles), and Lauren Dixon and Annmarie Solley (#3 doubles) all winning their first-round matches before losing in the second round.
In their quarterfinal matchups, Gerber and Crain lost to Flushing’s Kari Carnell and Natalie Galer 6-2, 6-2; Bond and Ostrowski lost to Davison’s Ashley Karnowski and Alysha Doellener 6-3, 6-1; and Dixon and Solley lost to Flushing’s Rachel Gossett and Christie Guenthner 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5).
Jill Perry was the only Brandon singles player to advance to the second round. Perry lost in the quarterfinals at #4 singles to Flushing’s Kathleen Farah 6-1, 6-1.
Also competing for Brandon were Amanda Bohr (#1 singles), Monica Lambert (#2 singles), and Danie Ashford (#3 singles).
