In a battle of neighboring schools, the Brandon girls tennis team won its first meet of the season Sept. 15.
The visiting Blackhawks triumphed 7-1 against the Goodrich Martians, improving their season record to 1-4-1. Brandon won three of four singles matches and swept the doubles competition.
Goodrich’s lone win of the day came at #1 singles, as sophomore Meredith Mayberry defeated Brandon senior Nicole Barth 6-2, 6-2.
The Blackhawks took the remaining three singles matches. Nicole Schuhrke defeated Amanda Bishop at #2 singles 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(3); Elizabeth Bilbey defeated Noel McAuliffe at #3 singles 6-3, 6-1; and Michelle Ashford defeated Molly Downer at #4 singles 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles competition, Brandon’s Jessica Sanday and Amanda Bohr defeated Goodrich’s Rachel Samuelson and Katie Krafcik at #1 doubles 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-2; Danie Ashford and Monica Lambert defeated Kirsten Simoni and Jane Alderson at #2 doubles 6-0, 6-0; Susan Gajoos and Christa Nedry defeated Vicki Haerens and Katie Feher at #3 doubles 6-2, 6-1; and Jill Perry and Lauren Dixon defeated Jackie von Linsowe and Holly Gerber at #4 doubles 6-4, 6-4.
Brandon’s next meet is Sept. 22 when they host Auburn Hills Avondale at 4:30 p.m., while Goodrich travels to Imlay City that same day for a 4 p.m. meet.
