It was a good day for the two local girls high school tennis programs.
Goodrich hosted its annual tennis invitational Saturday, Sept. 16, and Brandon offered use of its tennis courts to help provide enough space for the tournament’s eight teams to compete.
When the competition was said and done, it was the Blackhawks who emerged triumphant, compiling a total of 56 points to edge out second-place Gabriel Richard, which had a team total of 55 points. The Martians finished in third place with 40 points.
Points were awarded to teams in each flight based on their performance. The first place team would earn eight points for each flight, while the second place team would earn seven, and so on in descending order.
The Blackhawks earned first place finishes in two flights, #3 singles and #3 doubles, and earned runner-up honors in four more: #1 singles, #4 singles, #1 doubles and #4 doubles.
Meanwhile, the Martians captured the top spot in the #2 doubles flight, and finished third in two others, at #1 singles and #3 singles.
The Blackhawks also had a good day in Flint Metro League action Tuesday, Sept. 19, defeating Lapeer West 7-1. Brandon won three of four singles flights and all four doubles flights.
In singles action, Brittany Barber defeated Hannah Middleton at #2 singles 6-2, 6-1; Hanna Hubbard defeated Brynn Foss at #3 doubles 6-3, 6-2; and Lauren Dixon defeated Amelia Hofert at #4 doubles 6-1, 6-0.
