Brandon grapplers take second at Port Huron team tournament

Brandon’s varsity wrestling team advanced to the championship match of the Port Hurton Northern Team Tournament Saturday, Dec. 9.
The Blackhawks eventually lost a close title match to L’Anse Creuse North 43-39, but still earned a second-place finish out of five teams at the tournament.
Prior to the title match, the Blackhawks defeated Port Huron Northern 47-27; Anchor Bay 51-29; and Clarkston’s ‘B? team 42-29.
Five Brandon wrestlers earned first-place finishes in their respective weight classes, with each compiling a 4-0 record at the tournament: Jacob Beebe (112), Sam McGeachy (119), Andrew Hyde (152), Aaron Hyde (160) and Zeke Grounds (hwt.).
In addition, Keith Cordner (119) and Matt Sweetman (103) earned second-place finishes in their respective weight classes. Cordner compiled a 3-1 record on the day, while Sweetman finished at 2-2.
The Blackhawks were scheduled to compete in the Oakland County Tournament Dec. 15-16. In order to qualify for the second day of competition, wrestlers must win at least two matches during the first day.
