The Brandon boys tennis team tried their utmost to win the Flint Metro League tournament May 11 at Fenton.
However, the Blackhawks ran into a juggernaut in the form of the Holly Bronchos.
Holly won the tournament with 22 points, beating out the second-place Blackhawks, who finished with 15 points. Fenton and Lapeer East tied for third with nine points.
As a result, Holly won the outright league championship, while Brandon finshed second and Fenton third.
Brandon senior Jeremiah DeJose fell short in his bid for the #1 singles title, losing to Holly’s Steve Wilson 6-4, 6-2 in the championship match.
Two other Blackhawks, Brian Quarrella at #3 singles and Glenn Brado at #4 singles, made it to the championship matches in their respective brackets before losing in their championship matches.
In addition, four Brandon doubles teams — Kyle Racher and Aaron Bayliss at #1 doubles, Garrett Warrilow and Kyle Hartwig at #2 doubles, Chris Nuccio and Tom Gunnells at #3 doubles, and David Hughes and Steve Sanday at #4 doubles — earned runner-up honors in their brackets.
