The boys? lacrosse team opened the season officially last Tuesday with a 14-1 victory over the newly formed team from West Bloomfield.
The Dragons ruined the inaugural game for the hosts by putting up 63 shots on the shell-shocked West Bloomfield goalie, who had an All-State caliber game, according to Dragon Coach Nik Banda.
The Dragons were led by attackmen and captains Johnny Costigan (five goals, two assists) and Andy Plets (four goals, two assists). Taylor Barstead, the third attackman, added a goal.
Middie Adam Chappie opened the season’s scoring with his first varsity goal at the five-minute mark of the first period, followed by a goal 10 seconds later by Middie R.J. Hamilton and 90 seconds later by Plets, giving LO a quick 3-0 lead.
The Dragons broke the scoring open in the second half, getting all five of Costigan’s goals, among others.
Goalkeeper Spencer Murphy was only called upon to make two saves as the Dragons smothered the Lakers defensively, picking up an astounding 102 ground balls that the defense forced whenever the Lakers got their sticks on the ball.
Zaak Losee dominated the face-off circle, winning all but one of his face-offs.
The Dragons continued their early season success with a 15-3 victory over Rochester Stoney Creek last Thurday night, in the team’s home opener.
The team was once again led by Costigan, who had six goals and an assist, and Plets, who added two goals and two assists.??
The defensive effort was led by senior long poles Zac Clouse, Mike Muldowney and Kevin Kelly.?
‘Kelly excited the crowd with his patented end-to-end sideline bull rush running over two Stoney Creek defenders on the way to taking a wayward shot at the other end,? Banda noted.?
Rookie long pole seniors James Cathcart and Chase Hudson, along with sophomore Matt Gattinger, saw some valuable field time as well.
Murphy was stellar in net, stopping eight of 11 shots, many in the first quarter, giving the team a chance to get its offense going.
The Dragons are now idle for Spring Break and return to action visiting Royal Oak in an OAA battle on April 15.
