The Varsity Bowling team faced tough competition this week from not only Clio, but also the bowling alley as they travelled to Holly for this weeks? Flint Metro League showdown against the Mustangs.
The bowling center presented a challenge to the bowlers because of the oil patterns and how small the center was said Head Coach JR Lafnear. The boys and girls were able to overcome the obstacles and defeat Clio for their second win the FML.
The boys took it to Clio early, taking both baker games with scores of 146-124 and 177-153. Senior Corey Young led the way in the baker games, going 4-4. Clio wasn’t about to give up, and they took the first two matches in head-to-head play to put the pressure on the Wildcats.
However, the Wildcats responded after Junior John Garza won his first varsity match 142-125, followed by senior Sean LeBlanc’s victory, 156-147, and senior Mike Magyar’s 205-159 victory. The Wildcats also got points from senior Ross Hadden, senior Adam Bisaro and junior Kevin Rein.
The girls split the two baker games with the Mustangs, winning game one 148-120, but fell in game two by a score of 161-152. The girls were up 6-4 after the baker games, with sophomore Colleen Walters rolling three strikes in four attempts.
After the first set of head-to-head matches, the Wildcats were up 13-6, getting match victories by senior Anna Tomaka, Walters and senior Sarah Decker. Just like the boys, the Mustangs didn’t quit and won the next three matches, taking the lead.
The match came down to sophomore Heather Lafnear and Decker, and they delivered the victory. Lafnear rolled a 188 and was followed by Decker’s 171, sealing the victory for the Wildcats.
The girls won the second game by 13 pins.
‘The conditions in Holly test a bowler and a team to be at their very best. You must keep yourself under control and grind out scores to win. We did a great job today without scoring our best; that’s a good sign of a good team,? said Lafnear. ‘As the day went on, we eliminated our mistakes and pulled out important wins. I’m very happy for our bowlers.?
The girls next match is Saturday, Dec. 19 against Lapeer West.
