The Oxford High School bowling team came away with a win in its first game of the season Dec. 6, defeating Lakeville High School at Richfield Bowl in Flint. The Boys? Team won its match 17-13 while the girls cruised to a 25-5 victory.
In high school matches, the 30-point scoring system awards 10 points for two Baker games (where players bowl alternating frames in the same game) and 20 points in Head-Up play.
Both teams played two Baker games, and for the boys, both times they barely lost to the Falcons; Game 1 went to Lakeville 214-201 while Game 2 also went to Lakeville 160-150. For the Lady Wildcat bowlers, they won their games easily, 185-122 in Game 1 and 161-108 in Game 2.
Head Coach J.R. Lafnear said the boys struggled in Baker games last year, and the trend continued in this first game. Mike Magyar went 4 for 4 and John Taylor 3 for 4 in filling frames with marks to lead the Baker attack. Still, the Boys fell behind 10-0 going into the Head-Up play.
‘Falling behind 10 points with only 30 points available is difficult to come back from,? Lafnear said. ‘This would leave little room for error in Head-Up play.?
For the Lady Wildcats, leading the way in the Baker games were both Ashlee High and Anna Moses going 4 for 4 followed by Liz Laframboise and Kelly Cartner going 3 for 4.
The Boys rebounded from their flat Baker performance, courtesy of Magyar’s 223 game followed by Brandon Burgess? 202 game and Taylor’s 201 game.
Brandon Wynkoop won his match with a 177 game, giving Oxford 4 of 5 matches and totals in game 1.
With the overall score then Lakeville 11, Oxford 9, the Wildcats continued their pounce as Steven Lafnear in the second game bowled 199, Burgess bowled 204, and Wynkoop bowled 178. All won their matches.
For the Girls, they stretched their lead to a comfortable margin as High led the way with games of 201 and 214 and 2 victories. Cartner scored head-up points with a 223 game while Laframboise and Heather Lafnear also contributed.
This match was a non-conference match and served as a warm up for conference play which starts next week against Clio.
Both the teams head to Gerlaich’s bowling Center in Lapeer next week to face the Clio Mustangs. The Match will start at 2 p.m.
