The Oxford High School varsity soccer team remains winless on the season at 0-4-2, thanks to a 3-2 loss Aug. 27 on the road against Farmington Harrison.
But the Wildcats do look closer to getting into the win column.
Up until late in the first half, Oxford held a 2-0 lead over the Hawks. Getting the scoring started was senior captain Mitch Seeling, who took a long pass from junior Corey Olson and slotted a left-footed shot past the Hawks goalkeeper. Less than 10 minutes later, senior Doug Kiracofe showed off his ball-handling skills by weaving around the defense to score his second goal on the season.
Farmington Harrison scored a late first-half goal, and then right before halftime, they were awarded a penalty kick on what Oxford head coach John Thaler described as a ‘questionable? call. It was a bullet the Wildcats were able to avoid as the kick was unsuccessful. The coach credited the efforts of senior goalkeeper Tim Bachner.
‘With the shot, Bachner stretched his body fully to his right to make a spectacular save and re-energize the team going into half,? Thaler said.
As much as the Wildcats were energized, so were the Hawks as they relied on another penalty kick and what Thaler described as ‘some great offensive plays? to go up 3-2 and pull away from Oxford.
Oxford’s next game will be today at home against Goodrich, and Thursday, Sept. 4 the Wildcats will travel to take on Lake Orion.
