The Oxford varsity girls soccer team may’ve kicked off their 2007 season with a 7-3 loss to Richmond on Saturday, but they rebounded Monday night with a 1-0 win over Romeo.
Against Richmond, the Wildcats were playing with a third of the team missing, which included some important starters, due to a school activity.
Going into the half, senior captain Sam Bono brought the score up 4-1 with an assist from freshman Sarah Ricketts.
Two more goals in the second half weren’t enough to dominate Richmond.
On Monday night, Oxford brushed their loss to Richmond aside and played Romeo at their full strength with their key players back in the line-up.
The Wildcats had numerous unsuccessful shots at the goal throughout the first half, until Bono received a great pass from senior Ashley Marshall and brought the score to 1-0 going into the half.
The second half became more physical between Oxford and Romeo, leading to many fouls.
Goal keeper and senior captain Kelly Henry came up with a few key saves throughout the night, keeping a clean sheet and earning her her first shut-out of the season. ‘The team made drastic improvements over the past two days and are starting to get into a groove just before the (spring) break,? Coach John Thaler said.
Oxford’s overall record is 1-1.
The team’s next game is April 4 against Holly at home. They travel to Clio April 16.
